West Burlington, IA - Southeastern Community College will add men's and women's cross country for the fall 2018. Nathan Christianson has been selected as the head coach.
"Nathan is very experienced as a collegiate coach and comes highly recommended by others in the field," Gaston said.
Christianson earned NJCAA Academic All-American as well as NJCAA All-American for Indoor Track and Field for the 3000 meter run while attending Colby Community College. After two years at Colby Community College, Christianson transferred to Northwest Missouri State University in 2000, but a series of injuries cut his athletic career short. In 2002, Christianson became a student assistant coach at Northwest Missouri State University.
Following his first job at NWMSU, he has coached at numerous schools including Southern Indiana, Brescia University and Missouri Valley College.
He earned the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Conference Coach of the Year at Brescia University two times as well as Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Conference Coach of the year at Missouri Valley College. Christianson has had 77 cross-country and track and field national qualifiers as a head coach at the NAIA level of which 44 of those qualifiers were just in cross country.
"Coach Christianson impressed the hiring committee with his vast knowledge about the sport, but also, his knowledge of human physiology, his understanding of academic institutional procedures, and his intelligence and personality that should prove to be a winning combination in recruitment and team building," said Gaston.
Most recently, Christianson coached at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa for the 2016-2017 season.
Christianson holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Southern Indiana. He is a graduate of Charles City High School and a native of Charles City, Iowa.
